1. Why is AddsUp different from other calculator applications?
Most standard calculator programs do not provide a display of all entries used for a
calculation, just the results. Therefore, you have to re-enter the entire
calculation in order to make any changes or review the entries. AddsUp
functions and displays as though it were a standard desktop adding
machine. You can view, modify, notate, save and recall any tape
calculations.
2. What advantages does
AddsUp have over spreadsheet programs?
AddsUp feels, looks, operates, and has the speed of a standard
desktop adding machine. It does not require the use of spreadsheet
formulas or functions to add, subtract, multiply, divide or perform other
ad-hoc calculations, yet at the same time it keeps a record of what you
have done that can be quickly and easily edited. And it is incredible easy
to use.
3. How can I learn to use
the various AddsUp features?
Adds
Up has a comprehensive on-screen help manual and tutorials. To explore in
depth, select AddsUp Help Topics on the Help Menu. To get quick
information about an area of the AddsUp screen or a menu or other option,
click the What’s this? icon and drop it onto the desired object.
Alternatively, right-clicking an object will usually provide What’s this?
type help.
4. Can AddsUp be viewed while another
program is active?
AddsUp can be set to the Slim Configuration View and may be placed Always
On Top of other applications.
5. What is the Slim Configuration View
and how does it work?
The Slim Configuration View (combined with the
Always-On-Top option) allows you to perform and view calculations without
obscuring another application, e.g., Word, QuickBooks, e-mails, etc. You
can switch between this view and the conventional Application View by
toggling the Slim Configuration choice on the View menu.
6. What is the AddsUp Messenger
feature?
The AddsUp Messenger feature (Pro version)
allows you to customize and save a photo, logo, message or other image at
the top of the tape, which will appear every time that tape is opened (or
every time any new tape is opened). You can also setup the Messenger to
automatically load your favorite Web Page whenever you double-click it!
7. What is the Ref function and how does
it replace the Memory feature in a standard adding machine?
If you have ever used the memory
feature of a standard adding machine, you will appreciate the Ref
function, which allows you to include a previously entered or calculated
amount elsewhere in the AddsUp tape. To Reference an existing entry in the
tape, press the Ref key (or type “R”), scroll the tape to the desired
entry, and then press the operator key you want to use (+,-,*,/, etc.). A
black number will appear on the tape opposite the referenced line
(indicating the source of the reference). The same number will appear in
blue opposite the line you have just entered (indicating a referenced
number). Anytime the source of a reference changes (either because you
edit it or as the result of some calculation), all other entries that
reference it will also change. Note that you can also create a reference
to an existing source reference simply by pressing the Ref key and
entering its number followed by the desired operator. You can also include
references to your source references in other Windows programs (see
Pasting into other Windows programs).
8. How can I paste from AddsUp into other
Windows programs, i.e., Word, QuickBooks, etc.?
AddsUp
suuports the standard Windows Copy command, along with Paste and Special
Paste to other Windows applications. With the Special Paste feature a user
can dynamically link an AddsUp entry to another Windows document so that
every time an entry is changed in AddsUp, the other document will
automatically change. Additionally, if both the AddsUp tape and the other
document are saved, the user will be able to retrieve the AddsUp
calculations every time the document is recalled…no lost scraps of paper.
Any AddsUp cell can be copied and pasted. Only References can be Special
pasted.
9. What is the SmartEnter ä key and how does it
work? The
keyboard Enter key has many functions. If you press the Enter key after
entering an amount, AddsUp will assume that you want to ADD the entry.
Press the Enter key again and you will get a Subtotal. Press it yet again,
and a Total will appear. Press it once more to Clear. The Enter key is
also used in multiplication and division.
10. What are the various ways data can be
entered into AddsUp?
Data can be entered
simultaneously from the on-screen display, the keyboard, or an external
keypad.
11. How do I correct an entry?
AddsUp allows you to make any changes to any entry
just by scrolling to it or placing the cursor over the item to be changed.
Then just press the operator key (+,-,*,/) and the entry is changed.
12. Does AddsUp recalculate the tape when
I make a change?
Once an
item is changed, AddsUp automatically recalculates the entire tape. Unlike
a standard desktop adding machine, you do not have prepare to a new tape.
13. What are my options for printing from
AddsUp?
Unlike most
Windows programs that support a single default Printer, AddsUp keeps track
of TWO printers which you can configure separately, and then switch
between, using the Printer Options screen (or print to directly using the
two Print icons on the toolbar). The Main Printer will normally be set up
as your regular Windows printer (typically a laser printer located
elsewhere on your network). The SlimPrinter is usually a narrow-width
printer (available optionally from AddsUp.net), that is connected directly
to your computer via a Serial or USB port and which resides on your desk.
Each Printer can have its own font and size configuration. AddsUp has been
designed especially to talk to the SlimPrinter. If you enable the
SlimPrint Ruler (on the toolbar), and select the best Fit font size option
on the SlimPrint keypad under the Slim Devices menu, AddsUp will
automatically adjust the font size to fit the width of tape you have
specified in your SlimPrinter, based on the number of columns you wish to
print.
14. Why
can’t I get AddsUp to print to my SlimPrinter?
The SlimPrinter, purchased separately, must be properly
configured by following the Setting Print Options in the on-screen Help.
15. What are the S (Sigma) and GT keys
used for?
The S (Sigma) key (Pro version) is used to
total a series of multiplications and divisions (i.e. calculations that
end with a *). The GT (Grand Total) key (Pro version) allows the user to
add a series of Totals.
16. What is the SlimPad
feature?
The SlimPad
is a small Memo area that appears at the top of the tape. You can use it
to describe the contents of the tape or to place a heading at the top of
the tape when it is printed. You can turn its display on and off with the
SlimPad button on the toolbar.
17. Can I notate the amounts entered into
AddsUp?
A powerful advantage of AddsUp is the notation feature. You
can enter descriptive information next to each amount for future
reference. This is covered in some detail in Exercise 2 of the AddsUp
Tutorial in the on-line Help.
18. Can I insert additional columns into the AddsUp tape?
AddsUp Pro allows you to insert and delete
additional columns. These columns can be formatted as text or numbers or
dates. To do this, select View-Options-Tape and click on New. HINT: You
can also bring up the Tape options directly by clicking on the Tape
columns header.
19. What is the Add Funcs key used
for? The Add
Funcs key (Pro version) supplies the user with a series of pre-programmed
financial calculations, i.e., mortgage, amortization, etc. This is another
powerful feature that will be expanded in future AddsUp versions.
20. How can I get technical support?
AddsUp users may obtain
technical help via the AddsUp web site: www.addsup.net. If you are reading
this, you probably already know this! The quickest way to get to the
support page is to click the Support menu choice in the AddsUp on the Web
submenu of the Help menu.
21. Will hiding AddsUp in the system tray lose my data?
This is another convenient feature of AddsUp. You can
perform a series of calculations, and instead of closing AddsUp, simply
minimize it, by clicking on the – sign in the upper right corner. This
places the current tape into the system tray in the lower right corner of
your screen. Simply double-click on the AddsUp icon to bring the current
tape back with all your calculations intact!
22. Can I change the settings and make them the new default?
Yes. You can change the default settings, so that every time
a new tape is opened it will appear just the way you want it. Use the
View-Options menu to change the Calculator and Tape options to reflect the
way you want your new defaults to look, and then click the SaveAs Default
button. NOTE that each set of options must be saved separately. You can
also create templates that allow you to save several different sets of
options. This is covered in Exercise 2 of the AddsUp Tutorial in the
on-line Help.
